person filling out check
We understand that everyone uses a checking account differently, that’s why we offer a spectrum of easy, flexible, and convenient checking options to meet your individual needs and goals.
Online and Mobile Banking may be subject to additional terms and conditions and /or third party service provider fees.
Peoples State Bank offers a discretionary overdraft privilege in connection with it’s checking accounts. Instead of automatically returning your overdraft item to the store or an individual, overdraft privilege allows us to consider, without obligation on our part, payment of your reasonable overdraft. Of course, we are not promising to pay your overdrafts, not all accounts are eligible, and some restrictions do apply (See OVERDRAFT PRIVILEGE DETAILS BELOW).
Peoples State Bank offers three overdraft solutions to assist you in managing your account while allowing you to control your cost. Paying attention to your financial needs is our top priority.
To prevent overdraft fees, we recommend that you maintain all account activity in a check register and routinely reconcile your account to the balance reported by the bank. Using our automated telephone information system or Online banking to monitor your account balance and account activity can assist you in managing your account.
The best way to avoid overdraft fees is to keep track of your account balance by entering all items in your check register, reconcile your checkbook regularly and manage your finances responsibly. However, if a mistake occurs, Peoples offers the following alternatives to cover overdrafts.
Ways to cover overdrafts at Peoples | Examples of Associated Fees* | Comparative Cost** |
Good account management | $0 | no |
Account sweep | $5.00 | $5.00 |
OD Privilege | Overdraft Item fee of $35.00 per item | $35.00 |
*These costs are provided only as example. Please ask us about specific products and fees.
**Comparative Costs based on one (1) insufficient item, resulting in an overdraft of $100.00
Account Sweep: This product allows you to protect your account against overdraft and insufficient item fees by transferring funds from another account when needed. By creating a link between your primary checking account to a secondary checking or savings account with our institution, any presented items that would cause an overdraft in the primary account will be paid by available funds that are automatically “swept” or transferred from the secondary account. (See our schedule of fees) Certain account types have transaction limitations; please speak to a personal banker to determine whether transaction limitations apply.
Standard Overdraft Services: When you do not have enough available funds in your account to cover an item, subject to the bank’s sole discretion; we may allow you to overdraw your account up to our standard overdraft limit of $600.00. To “opt-in” to our Standard Overdraft Service speak to a personal banker or call us at 936-628-3312. This is not a line of credit. You may revoke your “opt-in” at any time.
In order for an account to be eligible for Standard Overdraft Services it must meet the following criteria:
The bank reserves the right to suspend Standard Overdraft Services from any account if, in the bank’s judgment, the likelihood that an overdraft will not be repaid exists. The following are examples of situations where the bank would suspend the service; the account remains overdrawn 30 days or more, has excessive overdraft activity or excessive fees, or if the account is subject to any legal or administrative order or levy. Accounts will be closed once it has been overdrawn for sixty (60) consecutive days.
We offer this service as a courtesy in anticipation that you will be making a deposit soon to bring your account to a positive balance. We are under no obligation to pay items when your account has insufficient funds, even if previous transactions were paid.
Fees: One insufficient (NSF) fee of $35.00 is charged to your account for each transaction that is returned unpaid. One overdraft (OD) fee of $35.00 is charged to your account for each overdraft transaction item that is paid. No more than five (5) OD fees can be charged per day regardless of the number of items presented on consumer accounts. You will not be charged our normal OD fee for items that overdraw your account $5.00 or less. All fee count against your overdraft limit. As required by Reg. E., Peoples State Bank does not assess OD fees of any type against one time debit card transactions on consumer accounts. You acknowledge that the charging and collection of these charges and fees are not interest or compensation charged by us for the use, forbearance, or detention of money.
Items Included: If you have “opted-in” for Standard Overdraft Services on checks, ACH, and recurring bills, we will consider for authorization and payment overdrafts for the following types of transactions: in-branch withdrawals, checks, transfers, automatic bill payments, and other transactions made using your checking account number.
Opting Out: If you decide you no longer want this service, you can request to “opt-out” of our Standard Overdraft Services at any time by visiting one of our branches or by calling us at 936-628-3312. If you choose not to participate in our Standard Overdraft Services be aware that all items presented against insufficient funds on your account, besides those that we are legally obligated to pay, will be returned or denied whenever possible, regardless of the type of transaction (preauthorized debits, ATM withdrawals, transfers, point of sale (POS), in-branch withdrawals, and checks.)
Eligible Account Products: Account products that are eligible for our Standard Overdraft Services include: Secure Checking, Personal Checking, Peoples Club, Peoples Silver, NOW Accounts, and Sole Proprietorship Accounts. Peoples State Bank reserves the right to limit this service to one account per customer.
Order of Payment: We may determine in our discretion the order that we process and post credits, debits, and holds to your account. Typically, all credits are posted to your account first, and then items are paid in the following order by category:
Items inside each category are paid in the order in which they are received, with the exception of checks, they are paid in sequential check number order. The order in which transactions are paid can affect the total amount of overdraft fees incurred.
Reinstatement: Once you have been suspended from our Standard Overdraft Services, you can be considered for reinstatement if you maintain your account in good standing with regular deposits being made and no insufficient account activity for 60 consecutive days, your request for reinstatement can be made by contacting your local branch.
